Trauma can happen anywhere, but trauma that occurs within the religious setting by religious people has unique elements. Religious beliefs carry strong ties to the deepest parts of how we relate to ourselves and others. Sometimes those very beliefs can be used against us to our detriment. This is a form of spiritual abuse. Spiritual abuse is a process of using biblical or religious principles to manipulate, to produce fear, to create guilt, to cause shame, and to otherwise put pressure on people to behave a certain way so that another can gain some sort of advantage over them. If you believe this is happening or has happened to you or someone you love, you don't have to struggle alone. Let's talk.
In addition, if you answer "yes" to any of the following questions you may find my coaching beneficial.
* Are you being mistreated by a religious authority, but unsure how to navigate it healthfully and lovingly?
* Have you ever felt religious pressure to conform in ways that were harmful to you? For example, an abusive husband using Bible verses about wives submitting to husbands in order to exert his dominance and control of her.
* Are you wrestling with questions about your faith, but feel completely alone or feel it's unsafe to talk about it?
* Do you have a negative history with church people that is difficult to resolve or navigate?
I welcome all religious backgrounds to my coaching, but most of my knowledge and experience is with the Christian religion. I am here to support your healing and honor you in your process wherever you are in it. As a coach in religious trauma recovery, I aim to be a safe place for sharing your hurt, your anger, your fears, your questioning, or any other experiences on your heart we can walk through together that will help you move toward growth and healing. Depending on your level of trauma and recovery status, other therapies may also be recommended in conjunction with or as an alternative to the coaching, and I am happy to help you find the support that meets your needs.
I also welcome conversations with church leaders, counselors, and coaches who are also interested in increasing their spiritual safety in helping others.
